Fighting To Protect Your Rights

Beware The Sex Offender Registry

You can be incarcerated for not registering as a sex offender in Michigan if you have been convicted and sentenced. At Garton & Vogt, P.C., we provide experienced legal help to minimize consequences to the fullest extent possible.

Offenders are required to register their address according to the tier of their offense on the following schedule:

  • Tier 1 offenders must verify for the first half of January each year.
  • Tier 2 offenders must verify for the first half of January and July every year.
  • Tier 3 offenders must verify four times a year during the first half of January, April, July and October.

Additionally, offenders must report changes to the following information within three business days:

  • Change of residence or domicile
  • Temporary lodging information other than a residence for more than seven days
  • Change in place of employment or discontinuation
  • Vehicle information for vehicles owned or operated, or discontinuation of ownership or use
  • Legal name
  • Email addresses and screen names
  • Enrollment at an institution of higher learning or discontinuation of enrollment

Registered sex offenders must also provide any changes or new telephone numbers, passports, immigration documentation, and occupational licensing information during the verification period.

Other requirements apply, and they are strict.

Failure To Register As A Sex Offender

Sex offender registration violations are strict liability offenses. You either registered within the timeframe or you didn’t.

Do not speak to law enforcement officers or investigators without first speaking with one of our attorneys. You have the right to remain silent; do not say anything.
