Every year in Michigan, countless parents struggle to make their monthly payments of child support. Sometimes this is because they have lost their job or other circumstances have changed in their life to make it harder to manage their finances. Unfortunately, if your arrears grow too great, a warrant could be issued for your arrest. Furthermore, your child may go without the financial support he or she needs.
In Macomb County, a crackdown has resulted in the arrest of 81 people in relation to child support arrears. A further 37 chose to report in of their own volition. The total arrears owed by these 37 and the 81 arrested is reported to be $2.8 million, according to Friend of the Court. The office is said to carry out sweeps of this nature every so often throughout the year.
Similar initiatives exist throughout the United States, so if you are falling behind on payments or struggling to keep up with your child support obligations, it is sensible to address the matter as soon as possible. Simply ignoring it could quickly get you into serious legal trouble. However, it may be possible to negotiate a more manageable payment arrangement or even have the amount you owe reconsidered by the court.
This can seem like a lot to deal with on your own, but do not lose hope, as there is help available. An attorney may be able to answer your questions and provide some of the answers you need. He or she may also be able to support you in pursuing a fairer arrangement and protecting yourself from legal consequences if you have fallen behind with your child support obligations.
